Chameli Ramachandran (b.1940)
Wife of senior artist A. Ramachandran, Chameli has done a series of works on the subject that consumes her -- nature. She is a Chinese by birth; in fact, she was born in Santiniketan and named by the great poet Rabindranath Tagore. Despite studying art at Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, and having a consistent art practice for the past 40 years, Chameli has remained self-effacing when it comes to public showings of her work.
"Her works are an amalgamation of the Santiniketan environment with its unbounded joy in nature as well as incorporating the meditative element of ancient Chinese civilisation. Combining metallic colours and pigments with ink, Chameli is able to capture subtle, understand movements of breeze and light playing with trees and flowers, waves lapping the sombre rocks at the seashore, the swaying of coconut palms, the exuberant lotus pond and the rhythmic flight of pigeons," explains an art gallery executive from Delhi.
She now lives and works in Delhi.
