K. G. Subramaniam (b.1924)
He has had an eminent career. He was a consultant to the Handloom Board in the 1960’s; later he was associated with the National Institute of Design; he was President of the Craft Council of India from 1974 to 1976, and elected to the World Craft Council in 1975. He was a delegate to its Asian Assembly at Sydney in 1975, and to its General Assembly at Oaxtepec, Mexico, in 1976. In the same year he also visited Canada on a lecture tour of the Canadian Universities. His works have been widely exhibited in India and abroad, and his oeuvre shown together in three retrospective exhibitions: at the Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, in 1981; at Kolkata in 1983 and at Delhi in 1984.He was awarded Medallion of Honorable Mention at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1961, and the Gold Medal at the first Indian Triennale in 1968; honoured with the Padma Shri by the Govt. of India in 1975, with the Kalidas Samman in 1981, and the Aban-Gagan Puraskar in 1991. He received an honorary D. of Lit. from the Rabindra Bharati University and the Benares Hindu University. He is also Fellow of the National Lalit Kala Akademi and of the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi.On his retirement in 1989, he was made Professor Emeritus. He continued to live and work in Santiniketan, Bengal, India.
He currently resides and works in Baroda, Gujarat.
